Introduction
A new chapter in life has begun for Granton Gas Holder in North Edinburgh. The B-listed last survivor of an abandoned openwork gaswork structures from the Victorian-era, visible from afar on the skyline of Edinburgh's north coast, it has been a sentimental piece of the Granton for several generations. It has now become full of light and life artistic component of the £ 1.3 billion Granton Waterfront revitalization project.
The surrounding gas holder area of 50 hectares of land, now owned by the City Council, will exemplify the city's modern renovation: transformed into a modern and sustainable, bustling, net-zero-carbon quarter of the city to positively impact local, present and future residents of Granton and more broadly - other communities, councils in Scotland and the world.
The first milestone in this long-awaited revitalization is the Illuminating Granton Gas Holder Project. This light blue lacy gas tower will be 120 years old next year (1903-2023). More about its history HERE. It is 252 feet wide and 157 feet high.
To show its splendor and delicacy again, was possible thanks to the cooperation of the City of Edinburgh Council, Edinburgh College and the leading Scottish event management company 21CC Group. They agreed to share its artistic and technical knowledge and skills with EC students to transform this iconic gas canister frame into a stunning, giant, illuminated statue that shimmers with colors every night. Depending on the holiday, event and occasion, the lightshow looks different. The project started on May 19, 2021 and will last 2 years.
Students from various faculties and courses at Edinburgh College, all over the college's Creative Industry, have taken part and continue to participate in a variety of creative and multimedia events to promote the project and make the Granton Gas Holder a pride for the community as well.
Aged from teen to over 50, students take part in the design of light and sound shows, creation of entertainment programs, festivals, live concerts and other events, turning theory into practice under the supervision of professionals and with professional equipment.
